National Book Awards
O National Book Award é um dos mais importantes prêmios literários dos Estados Unidos, dado anualmente aos melhores livros escritos por cidadãos norte-americanos vivos. O prêmio é entregue desde 1950 em ao menos uma categoria. Atualmente, existem quatro categorias: ficção, não-ficção, poesia e literatura juvenil. Os vencedores, selecionados em cada categoria por cinco membros - painéis de julgamento independentes - recebem US$ 10,000 e uma escultura de cristal. O prêmio é administrado pela National Book Foundation. A tiragem da obra vencedora pode pular de 3000 mil para 100 mil exemplares em uma semana nos EUA. O livro vencedor atrai a atenção dos estrangeiros e de Hollywood

Booker Prize
O Booker MacConnell Prize, mais conhecido como Booker Prize, é considerado como um dos mais famosos prêmios literários em todo o mundo e dos mais importantes para os escritores de língua inglesa. Patrocinado pela Booker MacConnell plc - um grupo internacional de empresas ligadas à distribuição alimentar e à agricultura - e administrado pela Nacional Book League ou Book Council no Reino Unido - uma instituição independente que se dedica à promoção e divulgação da escrita e da leitura de livros em língua inglesa -, o "Booker Prize" é atribuído anualmente desde 1969, premiando obras em língua inglesa, ampliando o “status” e reconhecimento dos respectivos autores e contribuindo para a divulgação e venda dos diversos livros premiados.
Qualquer autor, cidadão do Reino Unido, da República da Irlanda, da África do Sul, do Paquistão ou da chamada British Commonwealth é elegível para ganhar o prêmio, mas a obra tem, obrigatoriamente, que ser publicada em língua inglesa e editada no Reino Unido. O prêmio atribuído em dinheiro corresponde a cerca de 20 mil libras esterlinas, recebendo também os restantes nomeados não premiados em torno de 1000 libras. O corpo de juizes nomeados para a decisão de atribuição do prêmio é constituído por cinco pessoas, quase sempre editores literários, críticos, romancistas, acadêmicos e celebridades não-literárias que, pelos seus créditos conferem grande credibilidade ao concurso. Estas personalidades anunciam uma pequena lista de finalistas (candidatos), constituída, normalmente, por cinco livros - publicados, obrigatoriamente, no ano anterior ao concurso - umas quatro ou cinco semanas antes da cerimônia, na qual é revelado o nome do vencedor.
A atribuição do prêmio está conta com um cocktail e um concorrido evento gastronômico realizado London's Guildhall, transmitido, ao vivo, pela televisão. O Booker Prize é uma das mais gloriosas instituições inglesas; uma instituição cultural de incomparável influência no mundo literário. Num país em que a média de leitura é de cinco horas por semana, o prêmio mobiliza tanta atenção quanto um torneio de futebol. Assim que se anunciam os finalistas, os direitos de publicação são negociados com outros países e as bolsas começam a colher apostas.
Pela capacidade demonstrada de promover nomes e obras em língua inglesa e pela reconhecida fama e prestígio, em 1992 a Booker MacConnell entrou em parceria com o Grupo The Tetra Pak Laval, na Rússia, para criar o Booker Prize Russo. Pelo incentivo que tem dado à divulgação, interna e externa, da literatura em língua inglesa e pelo sucesso atingido e em contínua expansão, o Booker Prize é hoje um dos mais procurados e ambicionados prêmios literários.
